Steamburg native dies in Florida
Leland J. "Pete" Burr, 83, of 10247 Burr Road, Steamburg, died Sunday, Feb. 18, 1996, in the Indian River Memorial Hospital in Vero Beach, Fla.
He was born Feb. 27, 1912, in Steamburg, the son of James and Edna Merchant Burr.
For 40 years, Mr. Burr was employed as a station agent by the Erie Railroad, retiring in 1973, and was a former councilman for the town of Coldspring. He was a life member of the Coldspring Volunteer Fire Department, was a member of the Randolph Moose Lodge No. 2273 and the Steamburg Cemetery Association, and a former member of the Steamburg school board.
Surviving are his wife, Maxine Chaffee Knight Burr, whom he married Oct. 29, 1977; eight daughters: Joanne Luce of Stafford, Va., Nancy Archer of Steamburg, Carol Hiller of
Charlotte, N.C., Patricia Gilbert of Anaheim, Calif., Louise Seiler of Alpine, Calif., Sandi Carr of Lincoln, Neb., Juanita Brooks of Randolph, and Maureen Thornock of Edgewood, N.M.; a stepson, Joseph Knight of Coeur D'Alene, Idaho; a stepdaughter, Donna Garrett of Spotsylvania, Va.; 29 grandchildren; 25 great grandchildren, 11 stepgrandchildren; 3 great-greatgrandchildren; 17 step-greatgrandchildren; and two sisters: Odessa Arrance of Steamburg and Lovisa Lockwood of Randolph.He was preceded in death by his first wife, Velma Boardman Burr; who died March 30, 1977; two great-grandchildren: Scott Booth and Luke Richards; a sister, Mildred Cain; and a brother, Lloyd Reeves.
The funeral was held Saturday, Feb. 24, in the Van Rensselaer & Son Funeral Home. The Rev. Charles Smith, pastor of the East Randolph United Methodist Church officiated. Burial was in Steamburg Cemetery.
Pallbearers were Mark Brooks, Justin Brooks, Gary Archer, Greg Archer and Michael Luce.
Memorials maybe made to the Coldspring Volunteer Fire Department.
