He was born in 1872 as Freerk Koopman (= Merchant) in the country village Oostwold in the former municipality Midwolda, in the eastern part of the Dutch northeastern province Groningen, son of the 27 years aged laborer Jan Koopman and laborer Hillechien Stam.

Freerk Koopman emigrated in 1894 to the USA.

Fred Koopman married on 21 January 1898 in Monroe, Butler County, in the northeastern central part of Iowa at the age of 25 years to the eight years younger Annie Heyes, who was also born in the eastern part of the Dutch northeastern province Groningen.

In June 1900 farmer and day-laborer Freerk Koopman lived with his wife Anna (19 y, born in June 1880) and their children Berend [Ben] (1 y, born on 13 September 1898 in Washington Township, Butler County, Iowa) and Hilchien [Hilke] (7 months, born on 15 October 1899 in Washington, Butler County, Iowa) in German township, Grundy County, in the northeastern central part of Iowa.

In 1910 Freerk Koopman (36 y) resided with his wife Anna and their children Behrend (11 y), Helgie (10 y), Eiza (8 y), Trientje (7 y), Nanntje (4 y) and Jan (11 months) in Ripley, Butler County, Iowa. On 2 September 1907 daughter Mary was born in Jefferson Township, Butler County, but died probably before 1910. Jan was born on 12 May 1909 in Ripley Township, Butler, followed by his brother Dick on 25 December 1911.

In 1920 Fred Koopman (47 y) lived with his wife Anna (39 y) and their children Ben (21 y), Lilly (20 y), Eice (18 y), Tena (16 y), Nancy (14 y), John (10 y) and Dick [Richard] (8 y) still in Butler County, Iowa.

In 1930 Fred (57 y) and Anna (49 y) Kropman (!) resided in Dorr, Allegan County, in the western part of Michigan.

In April 1940 farmer Fred Koopman (67 y) and his wife Annie (60 y) lived at an own home, worth $350, still in Dorr Township, Allegan County. Next door to them their daughter Eize (38 y) and her husband Jerry Aneweer (47 y, laborer/road worker) lived at an own farm too, worth $800. In 1935 they lived all at the same place.

Fred Koopman died in 1964 at the age of 92 years in Grand Rapids, Kent County, Michigan, but was buried in Dorr, Allegan County. His widow Anna died in January 1970 in Michigan at the age of 89 years.
