LAURITZ RASMUSSEN
Lauritz Rasmussen, Republic county pioneer homesteader and farmer for many years, was born at Kongsberg, Norway, December 23, 1828. As a young man he went to Christiania to learn a trade. while there he was united in marriage to Miss Maren Patrine Anderson, December 26th, 1861, and to this union were born 12 children, five daughters and seven sons.
The family came to America in June 1866 to Chicago, Ill., where they remained until in January 1870 when they came to Scandia, Kanas, taking a homestead six miles north of town, near Sherdahl.
Mr. Rasmussen belonged to the sturdy and energetic race of Norsemen. The hardship of the pioneers were also his lot, but by hard work and perseverance he succeeded and helped to build up this community, where he lived for 54 years. Death came rather unexpectedly last Tuesday, February 5th, 1924, and called him at the age of 85 years, 1 month and 12 days. His wife and three children have preceded him.
His departure is mourned by nine children, five sons, August, Alfred and Peter Rasmussen, of Scandia, Kansas, Charley Rasmussen, Kirk, Nebr., and Lewis Rasmussen, Omaha, Nebr., and four daughters, Mrs. J. Hendrickson, Kirk, nebr., Mrs. Charlie Katrineberg, Republic, Kansas, Mrs. Arthur Cardwell and Miss Laura Rasmussen, Scandia, Kansas, also 27 grandchildren and great-grandchildren and many friends.
The funeral was held from the home Saturday afternoon, February 9th, Rev. O.J. Lundberg officiating. Music was furnished by a quartet and burial was made at the Prairie Rose cemetery.
