CAPT LUTHER CHAPIN DEAD
Well-Known Franklin County Man Passes Away at Ashfield
Capt Luther Chapin, 86, of South Ashfield died at his home at that place yesterday. He had been in failing health for some time and death was due to a general breaking down. Capt Chapin was well known in Franklin County and a well respected citizen. He was the son of the late Squire Chapin, a noted character in his day. Luther Chapin was born in the old house at the top of the hill about two miles south of Shelburne Falls. The house was famous at one time. In it was a large hall where dances would be held, and the squire married many young couples there. Capt Luther Chapin gained his title by reason of his office in the old Buckland artillary, a somewhat famous military organization which flourished in western Franklin county over half a century ago, when men between the ages of 18 and 45 were forced to drill regularly. The house now occupied by Sheriff Swan at Shelburne Falls was originally built for an armory for the company. Capt Chapin early learned the trade of carpenter and joiner, and for years worked at his trade, being a proficient workman.
Luther Chapin was twice married, his first wife being Lydia Elmer of Ashfield. Five children were born to them, four of whom are living. They are Luther D Chapin of Plainfield, Norris D Chapin of Shelburne Falls, Mrs Eunice Proctor of Antioch, Ill, and Mrs Theophilus Graves of Trevor, Wisc. Capt Chapin's second wife, who survives him, is a sister of Deputy Sheriff Henry S Swan of Shelburne Falls. Three children are living as a result of that union. They are George Chapin, who lives at home, Arthur J Chapin, postmaster and merchant at South Ashfield, and Mrs Mary J wife of Luther Fuller of Shelburne Falls. The couple celebrated their golden wedding quietly December 4 last.
[published January 16, 1896, Springfield Republican]

Luther served as first lieut of the military company in Buckland, was elected Captain in 1841, honorably discharged in 1843, after which date he removed to Ashfield. Was a carpenter and wood turner, had eight children.
