Katharine Krohn Behringer was born in Germany (Rhenish Prussia) on either April 11, 1839 (from her obituary) or April 17, 1839 (from her gravestone). Not much is known about Katharine’s father, but he may have been a French soldier, who had a relationship, either by rape or romance, with Katharine’s mother, Margarethe Schneider. At the age of 7, Katharine came to America with her mother, Margarethe, and her uncle, Joseph Schneider. Margarethe worked as a domestic around Cedarburg and then became a sort of mail order bride, marrying blacksmith Henry Krohn from the Cedarburg area. Henry's wife had passed away and he had 3 sons to raise.

On March 11, 1858, Katharine married Heinrich Behringer and they moved to the town of Morrison in Brown County. They had 9 children, with only 2, Peter and Mary, surviving her. After her husband died in 1902, Katharine lived with her son, Peter Behringer, in Spruce. She died on April 5, 1923, from acute bronchitis and was buried next to her husband in St. John’s Catholic Cemetery.
