Clinton Bates was born on March 7, 1944, in Louisville, Miss., to the late McKinley Bates and Beatrice Gay Bates. Mr. Bates received his education in the Kemper County Public School System. He retired with 29 years from Kraft Oscar Mayer as a production worker in 1998.
Mr. Bates was an avid fisherman. He enjoyed gardening, cooking, grilling and being around his family and friends. Mr. Bates also enjoyed watching and playing baseball. In his early years, he played softball with a team that was organized by his former co-workers at Oscar Mayer, called the "Fillmore Pigs."
Mr. Bates leaves to cherish his memories, his daughters, Charity Smith of Houston, Texas, and Letoya McRelthe of Des Moines; six grandchildren; his brothers, Tommie D. (LueEsther) Bates, of Louisville, Miss., James Delton "J.D." Bates of Davenport, and Mitchell (Lorene) Bates of Jacksonville, Fla.; his sister, Hazie Bates Hallman of Louisville, Miss.; sister-in-laws, Lillie Mae Bates and Dorothy Bates, both of Davenport; and a host of nieces, nephews, relatives, and friends. He is preceded in death by his parents, McKinley and Beatrice Bates; three brothers, James Edward Bates, James Early Bates, and Lonnie Arthur Bates; and a sister, Callie Bates Harrington.
