August E. (Gus) Hoene of Cottonwood, 88, a lifetime Idaho resident and retired Cottonwood businessman, died Monday of a heart attack at his home here.

He was born October 2, 1907 at Keuterville, idaho to John and Susanna Seubert Hoene. They moved to Cottonwood in 1908 and opened Hoene Hardware and Implement there.

He attended grade school at St Joseph's School and spent two years at Cottonwood High School and two years at Gonzaga Prep at Spokane, where he was a member of the band and basketball team. He graduated in 1925.

He helped organize the Cottonwood Fire Dept in 1926. He began working for his father in the sawmill and hardware store and married Magdalena (Lena) Romain Sept 1, 1931 at Fort Benton, MT.

He became chief deputy sheriff for Idaho January, 1933 and served until May, 1935. In 1939 he bought the hardware store from his father with partner, J.W. Seubert.

He was a charter member and 1957 president of the Lions Club, a life member and two time grand knight of the Knights of Columbus and a member of the Elks Lodge and Grangeville Country Club.

He served 13 years on the Cottonwood City Council and one term as mayor and served as president of the Idaho County Young Democrats. He was chosen Democratic State Committeeman in 1962. He eventually joined the Republican Party in which he was active for the last 30 years.

He was awarded a Cottonwood Community Service Award by the Jaycees and in 1989 he and wife were chosen grand marshalls for Buggy Whip Days. In 1991 they celebrated their 60th wedding anniversary.

He was a member of the St Mary's Hospital Advisory Board and served as chairman of the new hospital finance committee.
He enjoyed fishing, playing cards, golfing, gardening, landscaping and writing family and community histories.
