One of eight children born to Rudolph (Rube) and Irene Charboneau Olson, he served for 26 years in the United States Marine Corps and during the Vietnam era served in the artillery division of the Marines.
He and Teri Tamamura were married in Okinawa, Japan, Feb. 15, 1966.
After his honorable discharge and return to Colfax, he worked as a custodian for Washington State University until his retirement.
His wife preceded him in death in 2003.
