Hartwell was a millwright by trade.

Family traveled by covered wagon from S.C. to Illinois, leaving on Christmas Day, 1816. They stopped first in Madison Co and moved on to settle in Greene Co IL May 1820.

Hartwell became the first teacher in the Greene Co. area where he settled.

Just as Hartwell and Margaret braved moving to new lands, many of their children (including Ann, Huldah, Emily, Patience, William) followed in their footsteps, forming covered wagon caravans of Hunnicutt, Moore, Beeman, Silkwood and other Greene and Scott Co. Illinois families in the early 1840's to settle in the Peter's Colony, Texas, and surrounds. The families built stockades around their cabins to protect themselves from Indians. Many of these pioneers had significant roles in the creation of Dallas County and Dallas City. Daughter Emily was the 2nd white woman to settle in Dallas Co, and is referred to as "Mother of Dallas County" in her obit. Her husband was the first Representative when the Republic became a State.

Actual burial location not proved. The "Greene County Directory", pg.854, states that he died in 1832 and "his ashes repose within the borders of Greene County". Placed in this cemetery with his wife and sons Rowel and James, for search convenience and where he may be interred.

Edit received Nov 2019: "William C. HUNNICUTT and Patience HUNNICUTT, twin brother and sister, were
the first children of Hartwell and Margaret HUNNICUTT, born in Illinois. Their mother
was not physically able to rear these twin babies so Emily took charge of William,
while Ann took care of Patience. They "spoon-fed" and reared them. Patience was
raised in the home of her sister, Ann and Mr. Moore. William was raised in the home
of Emily and John BEEMAN." Edit submitted by Contributor: Lara S (49667058)
