Edwin Symes, of Loda, Iroquois County, Illinois, enlisted in August of 1862 in Co. K, 76th Illinois Infantry and served until July of 1865. An Illinois veterans index records his birth in England and that he was 5’ 7” tall with blue eyes and light hair. Edwin married Adella Miller in 1868 in Iroquois County. (Illinois marriage index) Edwin and Adella are recorded in the 1870 census in Osage County, Kansas with Fred, an infant. By 1880, Edwin & Adella are recorded in Wabaunsee County in Kansas, with the additions of Blanchard, age 8, and Delbert, age 1.

Edwin remarried to Jennie M. (Martha Jane) Fauss (Faust ?) in 1883 in Wabaunsee County. (Kansas marriage index) They are recorded together in several Wabaunsee County, Kansas censuses.
