Joseph (no middle name) Halchin was the son of Nicholas Halchin and "Rose" Rosalia Suwadlo. He married "Marie" Vianna Marie Crawford on August 1, 1947.

Joe and Marie were the parents of 5 children:

Joseph Halchin, 99, of Punxsutawney, passed away Friday, April 1, 2016, at Mt. Vernon Personal Care Home in Elizabeth.

Mr. Halchin was born Feb. 1, 1917, in McKees Rocks, a son of the late Nicholas and Rosalia (Swadlo) Halchin.

He was preceded in death by his loving wife, Marie C. Halchin, on July 4, 2010.

Mr. Halchin was a member of the Grace United Methodist Church for more than 50 years. He was a teacher at the Punxsutawney Area High School for 38 years, where he taught physics. He earned his bachelor's degree from Edinboro in 1939, masters degree in education in 1949 from the University of Pittsburgh and master's degree in physics from the University of Pennsylvania in 1964.

He was very talented in woodworking and enjoyed giving his creations to family, friends and church members. He was a dedicated teacher, as well as a loving father and grandfather.

He is survived by a son, David Halchin and wife Michelle of Summerfield, North Carolina; three daughters, Jane Halchin and Jim Voytas of Burton, Ohio, Linda Chomas and husband Louis of Greenock and Bonnie Halchin-Smith and husband Pat Smith of Columbus, Ohio; seven grandchildren, Louis Chomas and wife Ann Marie McKenzie, Gretchen Chomas, Jake Chomas, Stephanie Halchin, Nick Halchin, Emma Halchin and Callie Halchin; three brothers, Frank Halchin and wife Carol of Des Plaines, Illinois, Henry Halchin of Cleveland, Ohio, and William Halchin of Texas; and a sister, Kathryn Brown of Seattle, Washington.

In addition to his wife, Marie, he was preceded in death by a daughter, Sue Ann Halchin; a sister, Virginia Witterman; and two brothers, John and Matthew Halchin.

Friends will be received from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. Wednesday, April 6, 2016, at the McCabe Funeral Home in Punxsutawney.

A funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday, April 7, 2016, at Grace United Methodist Church, with Pastor Doug Dyson officiating.

Private interment will follow in North Point Cemetery.
