Is there any evidence for Samuel middle name--Dempsey? I have never seen any use of it during his life. His father was "Hardy Miles" but his mother was named Elizabeth as proven in documents posted on my profiles pages on Ancestry. Lots of misinformation on the Miles family--time to get rid of it.

I'm not sure you are the one who posted the Find A Grave info for Hardy Miles. If so I would recommend a few changes but if would be easier if you could access my profile page for him on Ancestry as I've posted a number of documents in the Gallery section which prove some of his children: William, Benjamin (wife Margaret), Hardy Jr., and Samuel. There are others, of course, but these are proven in his Fairfield Co SC deeds. Son Samuel was also conveyed land in the 1830's in Mississippi in agreement for promising to care for Hardy and also for Samuel's "mother" proving Elizabeth was still alive. Elizabeth is the only wife ever mentioned until that very late marriage to Mary Fussell. It was the most prominent female name among the grandchildren and apparently the name of Hardy's eldest daughter. She is identified in Hardy's 1818 deed.

Unfortunately the name Ann Patterson was a mistake from around 1960 but is widely circulated.

The other thing I would like to see straightened out are the added middle names for all these people. Hardy Miles was never anything but "Hardy Miles", son of John Miles. and Hardy's son William was always "William Miles." He never had the middle name Hardy, especially in light of the fact he had a brother, Hardy Miles Jr. Hardy's son Samuel is simple "Samuel Miles" in dozens of records—not even a middle initial. Middle names started becoming popular at the end of the 18th century but mainly developed during the 19th century when they became common.

If there is no evidence for a middle initial or name they should not be passed around. It really muddles the research.

Thanks for your nice posts.

Thanks,
Gary Young
