OBITUARY :
MARTHA JAN-ARIES DURST passed away suddenly at her home in Hagerstown, MD, on Wednesday, March 13, 2013 at the age of 83.

Known to her far-flung relatives, their spouses and even some of their friends simply as "Aunt Martha," she never married nor had children of her own. Instead, she spent most of her life delighting in the growth, achievements and occasional misadventures of her nine nieces and nephews and their families.

Miss Durst enjoyed the surprises and tumult of life in a large family. She was at her happiest when the family came together for celebrations and reunions. Even with so much family to keep track of, she never forgot a birthday, anniversary, graduation or other important event in the lives of her family.

Martha enjoyed watching professional tennis, golf and baseball.

She will be greatly missed by her nieces and nephews who dearly loved her.

Miss Durst was born in Waynesboro, PA on January 5, 1930, the last of 10 children of Carrie M. Mentzer Durst and Urban Leslie Durst.

Spending most of her adult life in the Northern Virginia suburbs of Washington, D.C., she worked for 30 years as a civilian administrative employee for the Air Force at the Pentagon in Arlington, VA. She retired from the civil service in 1987 and moved to Hagerstown, MD.

She was the last of her generation, surviving all of her siblings, four brothers, French, Lewis, Robert and Arthur Durst; and five sisters, Katherine French Durst, Rebecca Durst, Frances Chastain, Miriam Brent and Mary Lemon.

She is survived by eight of her nieces and nephews and by seven great-nieces and great-nephews.

A graveside memorial service will be held at Green Hill Cemetery, 953 S. Potomac Street, Waynesboro on Thursday, March 21, 2013 at 2:00 p.m.
