Lydia McColley was the eighth child in a family of twelve children of Alexander and Polly (Razey) McColley. She was born March 3, 1842 at Ashtabula/Trumbell County, Ohio. She married Joseph Henry Cooper March 3, 1861 at Columbia County, Wisconsin. Joseph and Lydia spent the first years of their marriage in Green Lake County, Wisconsin. In 1867, they purchased his father's farm in Manchester township of Green Lake County. Around 1890, Joseph, Lydia, and their unmarried children moved to Blue Earth County, Minnesota. They lived for a short time in Beauford township, and then purchased a farm in Medo township. Joseph died May 27, 1897 in Medo township and was buried in Medo Central Cemetery in Medo township. Lydia continued to live on the farm for a while, but by 1905, she had moved to Winnebago. She later moved to Carlos, Minnesota and lived with one of her children. In October of 1917, Lydia moved to Ipswich, South Dakota and was going to make her home with another daughter. She died unexpectedly during the night four days after her arrival. The funeral was held at Ipswich and then the body was brought back to Medo township to be buried beside her husband.
