Virginia D. Bridges, 90, of Valdosta, died suddenly on Wednesday, March 14, 2007, at South Georgia Medical Center after a period of declining health.

Born in Anderson, S.C. in 1916, to the late Oscar and Katherine Dodson, she had lived in this area since 1946. Mrs. Bridges is a graduate of Furman University and was a founding member of Senior Order at Furman. Following her graduation, she taught school at Norman Junior College in Norman Park for four years. After getting married and coming to Valdosta and raising her children, she became a reference librarian at South Georgia Regional Library for 21 years. She was a member of the Womans Club that restored the Crescent Garden Center and a member of PEO, National Woman's Sorority. Mrs. Bridges was a member of Crossroads Baptist Church and formerly Lee Street Baptist Church, where she taught Sunday School for almost 50 years and was active in the WMU.

Survivors include her husband of 65 years, Ralph Bridges, of Valdosta; a son and daughter-in-law, Forrest and Inez Bridges of Hahira; a daughter and son-in-law, Ginny and Bill (Jr.) Ireland of Winston Salem, N.C.; six grandchildren, King ( Andrea) Bridges, of Hahira, Nichole (Kevin) Berryhill, of Lakeland, Graham (Faith) Bridges of Homerville, Greg (Tonya) Stalvey of Hahira, Tiersa (Ryan) O'Neal of Hahira, and Mary Virginia Ireland of Winston Salem, N.C.; and 11 great-grandchildren. She is preceded in death by five brothers and sisters.

Funeral services for Mrs. Bridges will be held at 11 a.m. on Saturday, March 17, 2007, in the chapel of Carson McLane Funeral Home. Dr. Ken Alford, the Rev. Charlie Scarbrough and Dr. Bill Ireland will officiate. Burial will follow in Sunset Hill Cemetery. The family will receive friends at the funeral home this evening, March 16, 2007 from 6-8 p.m. Flowers will be accepted or donations may be made to Crossroads Baptist Church.
