Mebane attended Chapel Hill High School and upon graduation served in the US Army. In 1955, he was married to Evelyn Eugene Pickett at Yates Baptist Church in Durham, NC. They have three children and seven grandchildren.
Mebane was employed by the United States Postal Service for 33 years. Prior to joining the US Postal Service, he spent 10 years serving the town of Chapel Hill, NC as a Fireman. Mebane was a member of Antioch Baptist Church where he served as a Deacon, was a founder of the Antioch Baptist Church Men's Club, and a member of the church choir. Mebane was a devoted husband and father and an active member in the Chapel Hill/Carrboro community. He was instrumental in leading the Chapel Hill Recreation Department and ultimately helped create the Carrboro Recreation Department. His devotion as a coach, leader, mentor and positive force to youth for over 30 years in the Chapel Hill/Carrboro area will never be forgotten.
He leaves his beloved wife, Evelyn "Bird" Durham; his children, Stanley Charles Durham Sr. of Columbia, SC, and his family, wife, Jane Ashley Durham; and children, Brittany Lee McAndrews/Charles McAndrews, Stanley Charles Durham Jr., and Madison McKenzie Durham; daughter, Beverly Durham Grabowski, of Chapel Hill, NC; and children, Emma Claire Grabowski and Evelyn Kate Grabowski, Kelton Strowd Durham of Manhattan Beach, CA, and his family, wife, Terri Parsons Durham; and children, Charles Grant Durham, and Grace Cameron Durham. He also leaves a brother, Hubert Lawrence Durham and his wife, Mava "Bebe", Durham of Greensboro, NC.
He was predeceased by brothers, Robert Polk Durham and Coy Edward Durham; and his sister, Kollah Strowd Oakley.
There will be a visitation service on Friday, March 22, 2013, from 6 p.m – 8 p.m., and the funeral service will be held on Saturday, March 23, 2013, at 2 p.m. at Antioch Baptist Church, 1707 White Cross Rd., Chapel Hill, NC 27516. There will be a Celebration of Life Reception to follow at the church fellowship hall.
