GRAPEVINE (newspaper unknown): 70 Relatives celebrate with
centenarian

More than 70 family members representing five generations were
at the Nichols House Nursing Home in Fairhaven March 19 when
Alphonsine Patnaude St. Armand celebrated her 100th birthday. She
received congratulatory notes from President Bush and Governor
Dukakis.
A resident of the home since May 1982, she lived for 70 years on
a dairy farm in Acushnet's Long Plain section. One of the first
Democrats to cast a ballot in Acushnet, she and her late husband,
Clement St. Armand, were the first voters of that party to
register in precinct 3, then a Republican bastion. In 1960, Mrs.
St. Armand hand-knitted an American flag which she sent to the
Hyannis Port of Sen. John F. Kennedy days
before his election as president.
A communicant of St. Francis Xavier Church, Acushnet, Mrs. St.
Armand was
presented the Marian Medal at age 90 in recognition for her work
on behalf of
her parish.
Born in New Bedford on March 19, 1989, Mrs. St. Armand was one
of 13 children of the late Edmond and Rosalie (Potvin) Patnaude.
Mrs. St. Armand's maternal grand-parents, the late Antoine and
Rose (Gregoire) St. Armand, are believed to be the first
French-Canadian family to take up permanent residence in New
Bedford, coming in the early 1860s from the St. Jean-Iberville
region of Quebec.
Five of Mrs. St. Armand's children survive, Linda Bergeron,
Yvonne Blais, Lucien St. Armand, Girard St. Armand and Lorraine
Bigler. She has 34 grandchildren, 68 great-grandchildren and 15
great-great-grandchildren. She also has cared for many foster
children. One of her sons, the late Clement St. Armand, Jr., was
an Acushnet selectman for many years. Mrs. St. Armand has a
brother, Leo Patnaude, 93, of Riverside, R.I.
