The Roanoke Leader June 1910

NEWSPAPER Issue of Wednesday, June 22, 1910

On the place of Jeff Belcher on Corn House creek. This time the victim was the 13 year old daughter of John Scales. It seems that some domestic trouble arose in which Scales, his wife and two other negro women figured. It is alleged that a gun was snapped at Scales and in the scuffle over the gun it was discharged and the daughter of Scales was killed. The latter then fled and has not been apprehended. A woman named Jerry Culberson was arrested, charged with complicity in the affair and is now in Wedowee jail. Another woman who was said to be present, Allene Barsh, was arrested Monday but released under a bond of $250.
