Major League Baseball Player. He was a second baseman making his debut for the Philadelphia Athletics on April 17, 1886. For thirteen seasons, he played with the Philadelphia Athletics (1886-89), Brooklyn Ward's Wonders in 1890, Pittsburg Pirates (1891-96) and St. Louis Browns (1897-98). He finished his baseball career with a record of 1521 hits, 34 homeruns, 821 runs scored, 839 runs batted in and a .267 batting average. He left the Athletics to join a new league in 1890 but that league folded after a year. Most players returned to their original teams. However the Pittsburgh Alleghenys worked to sign Bierbauer to their team. The Athletics complained of this act of 'piracy' and it went to arbitration. The Athletics lost. The result was that the Pittsburgh Alleghenys would henceforth be known as the Pittsburgh Pirates.
