FAMILY HISTORY - Parents and Siblings
William Prude I, was born Oct. 15, 1774; d. Jan. 8, 1833.
William Prude was a farmer, and a slave owner. He settled in the woods (forest), cleared land and built a hewn log house located on the Huntsville Road, north of McCalla Station, in 1815.
This house is still standing and in good condition. He was one of the earliest settlers of Jefferson County residing in the Jones Valley District, according to a record in “Tuscaloosa—The Origin of its Name—Its History, etc.” by Thomas Maxwell, dated July 1, 1876, p. 50, and was recorded among the papers of the Alabama Historical Society.

In 1819 William Prude was appointed by William Bibb, Governor of Alabama, one of the (3) three Commissioners to select the place for the Jefferson County site. With the other two, they selected Elyton, Alabama, which has since become a part of Birmingham. The State Papers in Montgomery certify to this fact. William Prude married Sarah Garrett, July 18, 1822, at the old home on the Huntsville Road north of McCalla Station in Jefferson County, and his wife, Sarah Garrett is buried in the Moore Graveyard, not far from the house in which they lived and which was built by William Prude in 1815.
