Death of Charles Roland

Charles Roland of Fairbury Nebr., passed away at his home here Tuesday, October 21, 1941, following an illness of several months, at the age of 83 years, 5 months and 23 days.

He was the son of Joseph and Katherine Hanes Roland, born in Berkes county, Pennsylvania near Reading on April 28, 1858. When a small child he moved with his parents to Ogle county, Illinois. At the age of 10, his parents died and he made his home with his brother's family. He accompanied them and five other families to Odell, Iowa, where they camped on the present site of the Iowa state capitol. He later moved to Lanark, Illinois and Lynn county, Iowa, where he met and married Sarah Cherry on December 10, 1878. She died April 4, 1890 leaving two children, Mrs. Edith May Faye of Troy Mills, Iowa, and Mrs. Luella Fredriksen of Fairbury.

In 1878 he moved to Hancock, Iowa where he engaged in the mercantile business for 20 years. He married Jennie Isabel Carter of Hancock, Iowa, on August 27, 1891. They had three children, Mrs. Olive Hosier of Fairbury, Ivan Roland of Buffalo, New York and Charles Jr., who died August 24, 1914.

In 1907 he moved to a farm southwest of Fairbury and in 1915 moved to Farbury where he has since made his home. In 1890 he joined the Methodist church at Hancock, Iowa, transferring his membership when he moved here. He was a member of the official board of the church and taught Sunday school for many years.

He is survived by his wife, four children, 10 grandchildren and 11 great grandchildren.

Funeral services were held this Thursday afternoon at the Methodist church with the pastor, J. LaVerne Jay officiating. Burial in the Fairbury cemetery.
