Harmon Gene Hurst

Harmon Gene Hurst, 83, passed away on March 4, 2013 at Mesa Springs Retirement Center in Abilene. He was formerly of Sweetwater.

Services will be held at McCoy Chapel of Memories at 2:00 p.m. on Thursday, March 7, 2013. Rev. Keith Clifton will be officiating. Interment will follow at Garden of Memories in Sweetwater.

The family will receive friends from 1:15 p.m. until service time on Thursday, March 7, 2013 at McCoy Chapel of Memories.

Mr. Hurst was born on July 28, 1929 in Canyon, Texas. He married Ivy Mae Haywood on January 19, 1951 in Sweetwater.

Gene was a member of Lamar St. Baptist Church in Sweetwater. He served in the U.S. Army during the Korean War and also served in the National Guard and he worked for South Western Bell Telephone and AT&T for 32 years. Gene, also, was a full time farmer 30 years and 12 years more part time. He lived in Sweetwater since 1964.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Ivy Mae Hurst, on May 21, 2011; his parents, Eunice Irene Freeman Hurst and Robert Harmon Hurst; his brother, R.J. Hurst; his sisters, Mary Ellen Franklin and Irene Beck; and his sister-in-law, Wanda Hurst.

Survivors include: Daughter-Vicki Berkobien of Abilene, TX; Son-Terry Hurst and his wife, Kathy, of Broken Arrow, OK; Sister-Helen McElwee of Lubbock, TX; 3 Granddaughters-Miranda Morris and her husband, Wolfgang, of Lago Vista, TX, Rebecca Faith Hughes and her husband, Michael, of Abilene, TX, Kari Hill and her husband, Ryan, of Savannah, TX; and 4 Great-grandchildren.

Pallbearers will be Vernon Duncan, Ronny Joe Dennis, Jack Kennedy, Neal Squires, Norman Massey, and Jimmy Davis.

Memorials may be made to Lamar Street Baptist Church Youth, 513 Lamar St., Sweetwater, TX 79556.
