Nancy ‘Sis' Hinman
Nancy "Sis" Hinman, age 72, passed away Oct. 8, 2002, at her residence.
Services will be held on Thursday, Oct. 17, at 2 p.m. at Anderson's Tribute Center. Visitation will be on Wednesday, Oct. 16, from 4 p.m. until 7 p.m. at Anderson's Tribute Center.
She was born Sept. 26, 1930, in Parkdale, Ore., to Leonard and Retha (Howard) Chandler. In 1934, her family moved to Mt. Hood, Ore., where she was raised with her sister and two brothers. On Feb. 12, 1949, James Brown, pastor of the Presbyterian Church in Parkdale, married her and Norman Hinman at the Manse.
Norman and Nancy bought property and raised their four children in Mt. Hood. By 1974 all their children had married and left home. In 1976, a partnership was made with son, Dale, and his wife to purchase an orchard in the Odell area, where she has lived since. Mrs. Hinman worked at many occupations while raising her family. She packed fruit at Diamond Fruit Company, clerked at Lum and Abner Market in Mt. Hood, cooked one year at Parkdale Elementary School, wrapped meat at Keils and Safeway markets and sold jewelry. In 1977 she decided to stay on the ranch and help her husband.
When asked what her finest accomplishment was, she said raising her children to adulthood. Wherever Mrs. Hinman lived, she had a large yard with flowers and large vegetable garden. She loved to can foods for winter. Nancy enjoyed reading and traveling. For 15 years she watched her 10 granddaughters and three grandsons play Little League baseball and traveled to wherever the All-Star teams played. She enjoyed having her family together at holidays or at any other time. She loved to cook for all occasions, sit down dinners, picnics or a large pot of chili after sledding or snowmobiling. She loved playing with her grandchildren, night sleighing parties and many sleepovers. Her grandchildren were her pride and joy.
She is survived by two sons, Dale Hinman and his wife, Melinda, and Bruce Hinman, all of Hood River; daughter-in-law Shirley of Hood River; sister Phyllis McDonald of Poulsbo, Wash., and two brothers, Leonard Chandler of Prineville, Ore., and Norman Chandler of Post Falls, Idaho. Nineteen grandchildren, 11 great-grandchildren and more than 100 nieces and nephews also survive.
She was preceded in death by her husband Norman in 1995, her son Hugh in 1996, daughter Debby Brosseau in 1977, granddaughter Empiro Brosseau in 1974, her father in 1969, mother in 1999 and grandson Mike Kreeklow in 2000.
Vault entombment will be at Idlewild Mausoleum.
Memorial contributions may be made to the Odell Fire Department, Hood River Ambulance Service or Hospice of the Gorge, c/o Anderson's Tribute Center 1401 Belmont Hood River, Oregon 97031.
