Merlin William Smith, 96, passed away 31 March 2005. He was born Nov. 1, 1908 in Logan, Utah the fourth child of James McNeil and Lydia Emma England Smith. Merlin graduated from Logan High School and the first seminary class. He attended school at Utah State. He married his college sweetheart Eda Doty of Richmond in the Logan LDS Temple June 8, 1932. They were married 70 years until her death Oct. 15, 2002.

In 1934 they moved to Preston and established Mereda's Vogue Shop, selling women's clothing and shoes. They operated it for 47 years. Merlin loved music, took a few piano lessons, and then taught himself to play the banjo and accordion. In Preston he organized a dance band and played the piano. They played throughout Cache valley for 30 years.

He was a charter member and president of both the Lions Club and Monarch Lions Club. Merlin served as scoutmaster, counselor in Sunday School and president of the Mutual. He was ward clerk under three bishops and was a stake clerk and High Councilman. Merlin had been living in a care center in American Fork, Utah.

Survivors are daughters, Carole (Eulyn) Jensen of Alpine, Utah; Bonnie Jayne (Richard) Irizarry of Boise, Idaho and Sharlene (Ralph) Leebert of Sacramento, Calif. He had 23 grandchildren and 27 great-grand children. Preceded in death by his wife, daughter Myrna, parents, three brothers, one sister and a son in-law. Funeral services will be Saturday, April 9, at the Preston 8th Ward Chapel in Preston, Idaho at 213 S & 2nd E. at 12:00 noon with Bishop Kevin Sharp conducting. Friends may call Saturday from 11:00-11:45 a.m. Burial will be in the Logan Cemetery. Services are under the direction of Webb Funeral Home.
