Hazel L. Barker, 101, of Independence, passed away Feb. 24, 2012 at Carmel Hills Living Center. Services will be 1:30 pm Friday, Mar. 1, 2013 at the Carson-Speaks Chapel, 1501 W. Lexington Ave, Indep. MO., with a visitation being held from noon until 1:30pm prior to the service. Burial will be in Mound Grove Cemetery. Contributions are suggested to the Harmony Heights Missionary Baptist Church, 1701 N Salem Drive,r, Independence, MO 64058. Mrs. Barker was born on Jan. 15, 1912 in Cowgill, MO to Daniel B. Ballew, SR and Susie Belle Hollingsworth. Hazel was a loving mother and grandmother who enjoyed spending time with her family and playing Bingo and going to the Casino. She retired from the Cafeteria department at Sugar Creek School and had previously work for Luce Manufacturing and Neevel Manufacturing. She was a member of the Harmony Heights Missionary Baptist Church in Independence and the Eastern Star. She was also a member of the Jolly Lamplighters at Maywood Baptist Church. Hazel was proud of the fact that she was able to live independently for most of her life. She was previously married to William Shirley and together they had three daughters. She is survived by the three daughters, Beverly Skeen (Shirley) and husband Willard (deceased), of Independence, Donna Craven (Shirley) of Independence and Janice Carol Black (Shirley) and husband Darrell of Hernando, MS. A brother, Ralph Ballew and wife Marilyn of Kansas City, MO and a sister Helen Marie Misel of Bonner Springs, KS. Five grandchildren, David (Cindi) Skeen of Lake Tapawingo, MO, William (Brenda) Craven of Indep. MO., Michael Craven of Indep. MO, Stephanie (Wayne) Rigsby of Newton, MS and Erik (Candace) Black of Ragley, LA. Eight great Grandchildren and a great great granddaughter.
