When the War broke out between the states, he enlisted in Company I, First (Maney's) Tennessee Infantry Regiment, CSA, in Murfreesboro on April 23, 1861, and was elected first corporal at the company's organization. He was elected sergeant at the company's reorganization after the Battle of Shiloh but was soon discharged because of illness. He re-enlisted in the Rutherford Rifles on October 20, 1862, when the company was stationed outside in Murfreesboro. He was wounded at the Battle of Murfreesboro on the last day of 1862 and also at the Battle of Adairsville, Georgia, during the Atlanta campaign of 1864. He was detailed for special duty afterward and surrendered with General Joseph E. Johnston's army in North Carolina on April 26, 1865.
In 1865, he married his first wife, Martha A. Jobe, sister of Ben and Dee Jobe, who also served in the Civil War. They had two children: Minnie P. and Mary S. The couple was divorced in 1873.
In 1883, Beesley married Mary Matthews of Weakley County, Tennessee. He was one of the leading farmers of the Seventh District after the war. He and his family were members of the Methodist Episcopal Church, and was recognized as one of the leading farmers of the county, and a moral and upright citizen.
He died July 3, 1891, and is buried in the Beesley Church Cemetery.
