John W. Bell was born May 9, 1846 in Blue River Twp., Henry Co., IN, the son of Nehemiah, of N.C., and Emeline Bell, of VA. His mother, Emeline, came to Henry Co., IN, with her parents, at the age of 4 years and lived here until her death. In 1804, his father, Nehemiah, was born and came as a young boy, with his parents, to Henry Co., IN.
John received a good education, taught school for 6 years and afterwards engaged in farming. He was appointed Superintendent of Henry County Poor Farm in 1880.
He married in 1870 to Mary E., the daughter of Rev. Samuel and Mary Sayford. John and Mary had one daughter, Irene S.
