...Sister Alice Marie Lawler, O.P. was born Oct. 3, 1916 at the farm home of her parents, Frank and Marie (Hager) Lawler of rural Ogden, Iowa. She attended Beaver Center Country School through eighth grade then graduated from Ogden High School in 1934 with a Normal Training Certificate.
...Sister Alice taught in rural schools and attended college in Cedar Falls, now known as the Univ. of Norther Iowa, for three summers. She attended college during the 1938-39 school year and graduated in 1939 with a two-year teaching certificate. Sister Alice taught elementary school in Iowa and Illinois for many years.
...She was received into the Dominican Order on Feb. 2, 1948 and professed her first vows on Feb. 3, 1949. As a Dominican Sister, she taught at Rockwell, Iowa; Rockford, Ill.; Imogene, Iowa; Omaha, Neb.; and Wheat Ridge, Colo. While at Wheat Ridge, she retired at the age of 72, serving as a volunteer at her church, school and a nursing home.
...Sister Alice returned to Wisconsin in 1998 to live at the Dominican Motherhouse and Villa at Sinsinawa.
...On Feb. 27, there was a short daytime wake service at St. Dominic Villa. That evening another wake service was held at the Motherhouse. Three funeral homes in Dubuque take turns donating their services for all the Sister-funerals. Four of the Sisters served as Pallbearers. The Sisters are buried in the order of their death. Each gravestone lists their name and date of death. The Dominican Sisters are a wonderful religious group. (From a family member that was able to make it to the funeral of Sister Alice.)
