My fathers name was spelled GILMON not Gilman. I have seen his DL with his name spelled with an O. I think a reason for that is more than likely a result of sloppy handwriting on birth records. In the early century many records were written by hand, as is a bible and that was the only record of birth. My father never had a birth certificate that I know of. When his name was recorded by hand on the census likely the "O" was mistaken for an "A" and thus the resulting misspelling.
