Lela was born in 1915 to May and Orland Hawkins in the home of her Grandma and Grandpa Schaeffer. When Lela was 6 years old, the family moved to a ranch on Bear Creek, after living at the Red House on Frontage Road and the Brooks House on Lower Diamond Lane.

The couple lived on a ranch in Zumwalt, and later moved to Joseph, where Lela taught both third and fourth grades in Enterprise and Joseph. Don sold cars and trailers. They moved to Milton-Freewater for several years but eventually moved back to Enterprise.

Lela was an accomplished pianist. Music gave her much joy. Religion was very important to her. Lela and Don both loved their animals, a dog named Lucky, and cats Gilly and Sammy, who gave both company and entertainment.

After retiring, Lela and Don enjoyed traveling in their trailer, camping, visiting friends and family, and spending many winters in Arizona. They loved to spend time with each other and played a game of gin rummy every day.
