John Wesley Smith was married to Laura Belle Whitley. John was a constable in Texas in his early years before moving his family north to Oklahoma and then west to California. He was said to have been close friends with Governor Pa Ferguson, possibly a family friend/neighbor of Belle. John Wesley's father and mother are a mystery. His mother was said to have been native American. John was said to have a brother named Frank. John also was said to have known sign language.
