Her father came to San Francisco in August 1949 at the age of 25 with the goal of selling merchandise to the miners during the California gold rush. He was successful at this enterprise, later turning his energy toward banking, insurance, and real estate industries, where he continued his success.

Mary was a life long resident of San Francisco and never married.

Buried in Section D, Row 1, Area 2, Plot 1/4, OGV are:

Alice Phelan (buried 2/7/1900)
James Phelan (buried 3/1/1893)
James Duval Phelan (buried 8/11/1930)
Mary Louise Phelan (buried 1/30/1933)

They are buried in a VERY, VERY large, ornate and intricately carved mausoleum. There are four columns at the front door entrance made of beautiful, dark Italian marble and the doors are just as intricate. The family name is carved just above the door. Amongst the other carvings on the building are alternating star flowers and rounded iron crosses above the four columns, flowers on the arched doorway, a wreath with a ribbon on it at the top of the entrance, and a wreath around large dome on top. The doors are locked, but you can peer between the intricate door at the BEAUTIFULLY made stained glass. Taken 4.3.16.
