Sarah married James Maddy in 1865, and together they had three children: Jasper Clayton Maddy and twins James Austin and Ava Maddy. When husband James Maddy died about 1868, she remarried: William Whitson Clark. They moved to Plumas County, California, where son Seneca (Sinnica) was born in 1872. The marriage ended and Sarah returned to Missouri. There, she later married Jonathon Hellums who died about 1901. Eventually she returned to California, and lived in Fresno with son Clayton Maddy.

She was originally interred at Mountain View Cemetery in Fresno, but when son Seneca died in 1929, she was removed to Belmont. Her grave is near son Jasper Clayton Maddy and his family.
