Virginia Beach - Doris Kathleen Bluford Wood, 93, passed away peacefully on February 6, 2013. She was born in Norfolk, Virginia on November 11, 1919. She graduated from The College of William and Mary in 1938 at the age of 19 with a Bachelor of Arts Degree. She was raised in the Willoughby section of Norfolk, where she enjoyed summers overlooking both "Big Bay" and "Little Bay," prior to relocating to Virginia Beach. She married Lt. William Jesse Harris of the Army Air Forces, who died in 1945. Doris worked in Norfolk for many years and married Alfred Lee Wood in 1956. She continued to work in various endeavors including the management of the family-owned Horatio Motel at 14th Street and the oceanfront, Virginia Beach. She enjoyed adventure-filled sailing trips up the Chesapeake Bay, travelling abroad, playing bridge with good friends, and a daily crossword puzzle. She had a love of music and enjoyed playing the piano. She also had a great interest in genealogy and took pride in the fact that she was descended from one of the oldest families in the Norfolk area. It could well be said that Doris was quite loved and respected by all who knew her, and she will be greatly missed.

She was predeceased by her husband of fifty years, Alfred Lee Wood, her five sisters and one infant brother. She is survived by her son, Dr. Richard Bluford Harris, his wife Carole, and his sons Dr. Jesse Bluford Harris and Corey Hartzell Harris; her son Dr. William Lawrence Harris; her son Alfred Lee Wood Jr., his wife Patricia and their children Dennis Austen Buchanan Wood and Taylor Anne Wood; and her son Horace Michael Buchanan Wood and his wife Kerin. She is also survived by seven nieces and nephews, and their children and grandchildren.

The family would like to express its deepest appreciation to the nurses and aides whose gentleness and kindness were a great comfort to Doris.

A memorial service will be held at 1 p.m. on Wed., Feb. 13th, 2013, in the chapel at H.D. Oliver Funeral Home, located at 2002 Laskin Road, Virginia Beach, VA. 23454.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to: Sentara Health Foundation, 6015 Poplar Hall Drive, Suite 308, Norfolk, VA. 23502-3819, who provided extensive, compassionate and invaluable services for Doris through their Hospice program.
