William Rhoten Hicks married Sarah Madeline Bryant, daughter of Rev. Brummit Bryant and Betsy Irvin. Their children were Oscar, Lilly, Lizzie, Thomas Brummit, Lula, Maude and Tyson.

William delivered U.S. mail on horseback throughout the English Creek Community for several years.

William's parents were James "Moses Jr." and Orpha (O'Dell) Hicks (who lived in the English Creek Community and must be buried in the area, possibly the Brooks Cemetery). William's siblings were Nancy, Rachel (Wilson), Susan (Keener), Elizabeth, James, Caleb, Wiley (husband of Tarlton Bryant's daughter Mary) and Orpha (Davis).

William was a great-grandson of Thomas and Sitchie Clevenger, the first Clevengers in Cocke County. William's mother, Orpha O'Dell was a daughter of Caleb O’Dell and Rachael Clevenger (Thomas and Sitchie's youngest daughter). Caleb and Rachael moved to Missouri in the 1840s with most family members following. Caleb and Rachael are buried in the Old New Garden Primitive Baptist Church Cemetery, where many of their offspring are.

William's paternal grandparents were Moses and Susanna (Childress) Hicks. His great-grandfather was Joseph Hicks (1752-1821), who came to Cocke County from N.C. William had an Uncle William who married Mary Jane Kyker, daughter of Joseph Jackson Kyker. They moved to Kansas.

In 1920 (census data), William, a widower, was living with 3 single daughters: Maude (30), Lizzie (41) and Lilly (42). He died the following year at 75.

William was buried in a different section of the Bryant farm (with members of Brummit Bryant's family), which later became known as the Hicks Cemetery. There is no remaining remnant of that burial area.
