He was born in the Coburns Creek District (about 8 to 10 miles south of Clarksburg), Harrison County, Virginia (now West Virginia), son of John and Susanna (Bumgardner) Ellsworth. He went with his parents to Clark County, Ohio prior to 1812. In 1821, his family removed to Madison County, Indiana, settling in Fall Creek Township, where later it became a part of Adams Township.

In 1825, Adam married Sarah "Sally" Rector. This was the first marriage consummated in Adams Township, Madison County, Indiana. Near Ovid (New Columbus) their five children were born: Nancy, Enos, Susann, Jonathan, and Jacob. Sally died there prior to 1850.

Following the death of his first wife, Adam married Mrs. Mary Morris, widow of Joshua Morris, with four sons. By 1855, Adam had moved his family, including the Morris boys, to Mercer County, Missouri. They purchased a farm near Modena, which was farmed until 1876, when Adam, Mary and her sons removed to Klickitat County, Washington Territory. They lived near Columbus (now Maryhill) on the banks of the Columbia River. He died here about 1879, while the area was still Washington Territory. Adam and Mary had no children.
