Walter James Amundson, 87, of Gilby, ND, died Thursday, December 27, 2012 at the Good Samaritan Center in Larimore, ND.

Walter was born August 13, 1925 in rural Inkster, ND to Arnold and Gertrude (Mann) Amundson.

On November 23, 1946, Walter married Frances Jean Lindberg and recently celebrated their 66th wedding anniversary. Walter and Frances made their home together in rural Gilby where he farmed his entire life and raised eight children. Walter was best known and loved for his story telling and his tremendous memory and ability to recall birthdates and anniversary dates of friends, family and acquaintances in the community. In his last few months of life, Walter created a journal of birthdays and anniversary dates of over 400 family and friends.

Walter is survived by his wife, Frances, of Gilby, ND; children: Robert (Mary) Amundson, Larimore, ND; Janice (Richard) Anderson, Belle Plaine, MN; Mary (Tom) Wells, Jamestown, ND; Sharon (Les) Sherwin, Larimore, ND; Ronald (Rhonda) Amundson, Gilby, ND; Nancy (Glen) Weber, Starkweather, ND; Cindy Drees, Fargo, ND; Richard (Renae) Amundson, Amenia, ND; 18 grandchildren and 22 great-grandchildren.

Preceding Walter in death were his parents, Arnold and Gertrude Amundson; brothers Omer and Lloyd, and sisters Doris Knudson and Florence Vold.

Private services will be held at the Bakke Funeral Home with burial at Bellevue Cemetery, Larimore, ND.

Walter's family would like to express our thanks and heartfelt gratitude to the caring and loving staff at the Good Samaritan Center who treated our husband and father with love, dignity, and respect.

Memorials may be designated to the Living Faith Free Lutheran Church or the Good Samaritan Center both in Larimore, ND.
