Brother Edward Barnard was born Edward Poulin. The records of St. Patrick's Catholic Church in South Bend, St. Joseph County, Indiana include the birth of Edward Poulin, son of Telesphor & Elizabeth (Barnard) Poulin, born on July 12, 1876. His godparent was Benjamin Barnard, Elizabeth's brother.

Edward, 4, and his brother Herbert, 1, were listed with their parents in South Bend in the 1880 census. The census shows that Telesphor Poulin had been born in Canada and Elizabeth Barnard in Massachusetts. Elizabeth's mother, Julia A. Barnard, was living with them. Telesphor and Elizabeth (Barnard) Poulin who had married in 1873 at St. Patrick's Catholic Church in South Bend, divorced in February of 1885. St. Patrick's Catholic Church death records show, and the local newspaper reported, that Elizabeth died later that same year, in August of 1885. The index of St. Joseph County, Indiana, adoptions includes the adoption of Edward Poulin by his grandmother, Julia A. Barnard. In the 1900 census, Edward Barnard, 24, and his brother, Herbert Barnard, 21, were living with their grandmother, Julia A. Barnard, in South Bend. She died in 1905.

In the following years, the marriage, census, draft registrations, and obituary for Herbert, all show his surname to be Barnard, so it follows that his brother Edward would have used that surname as well. Herbert died in 1959 and his obituary does not include his brother Edward amongst his survivors, indicating that Edward had died earlier.

Edward Barnard, resident of Collegeville, Jasper County, Indiana, registered for the WWI draft. His registration card says that he was born on July 12, 1876, the same date of birth as shown in the baptismal records of St. Patrick's Catholic Church, and on the quoted death transcription. The card says that his nearest relative was Herbert Barnard living in South Bend, St. Joseph County, Indiana, and it describes Edward as being of medium height, slender build, with brown hair and black eyes. The 1910-1930 censuses of St. Joseph College in Jasper County, show that Brother Edward Barnard's father was born in Canada and his mother, in Massachusetts.

It is likely that Edward was named for his maternal grandfather, Capt. Edward Barnard. who died in Salem, Massachusetts. Benjamin Barnard (who was young Edward's godparent) was the youngest son of Capt. Edward and Julia A. Barnard. Benjamin left Massachusetts to go to Indiana to attend school at Notre Dame. Two years later, his widowed mother and two sisters including Elizabeth, who became the wife of Telesphor Poulin, followed Benjamin and made South Bend their home.
