Joseph Erving Blackwell was the oldest of six children born to Stephen Henry Blackwell and Mary Ann Wright in Kershaw County, South Carolina. He moved to Louisiana with his father and sisters Janie E and Rosa Nancy Blackwell in 1900 after the death of his mother Mary Ann. The younger children Martha Alma, John Robert and Mary Catherine were left in South Carolina with relatives. Johnny and Alma lived their lives in South Carolina. Mary Catherine lived with her grandmother Nancy Lowery Wright until her death in 1901 at the age of 2 1/2 or 3.
Erving made his home in Sibley, Louisiana a few miles from his father's home located between Nine Forks and Dubberly, Louisiana.
