Phil M. Springer II 77, of Springfield died at 2 a.m. Wednesday at his residence.
He was born April 8, 1915, in Springfield, the son of Phil and Velma Springer. He married Mary Spratt in 1973. Mr. Springer was employed by Illinois Bell Telephone Co. He began as a lineman in Springfield in 1937. He later held various assignments at the company's plant departments in Peoria and Ottawa. He became plant staff supervisor in Springfield in 1954. He was operations manager of plant location records from 1974 until retiring in 1977. He was a member of the Abe Lincoln Council of Telephone Pioneers and was former president of the organization's Starved Rock Club and Peoria Council. Mr. Springer was a member of First United Methodist Church.
Surviving are his wife, Mary; four sons, Donald and Phil III, both of Springfield, William of New Orleans, La., and Tom Spratt of California; nine grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; one sister, Mrs. James (Eileen) Irwin of Denver, Colo.; and several cousins.
Services will be at 11 a.m. Saturday at Bisch and Son Funeral Home, with Dr. Roger Rominger officiating. Burial will be in Vigal Cemetery.
