Julius was born to Fred and Katie Alsdorf in Texas while his father was working as a boilermaker for the railroad. When he was about 9 years old, the family moved to Ottumwa, Iowa. He graduated from Ottumwa High c. 1933.
Julius married Ruby James in 1937. His son, Robert "Bobby" was born in 1940. He and Ruby separated and then divorced in the 1940s.
Julius enlisted in the Army Air Corp in 1943. He served as a radio operator on a troop transport plane in the European theater. He stayed in the Air Force after the war, serving in Germany, Korea, Vietnam, Spain and at the Strategic Air Command in Omaha, Nebraska.
Julius retired from the Air Force on March 1, 1969 and settled in Phoenix, Arizona, where his parents had retired to. He died in 1982 after a multi-year battle with cancer.
