Mary was born to Fred and Katie Alsdorf when they were living in Denison, Texas while Fred was working as a boilermaker for the railroad. She had two older sisters and two older brothers. When she was two years old, her younger brother was born.

When Mary was around 7 years old, the family moved to Ottumwa, Iowa, where her father continued to work as a boiler maker for the railroad. Mary graduated from Ottumwa High School in 1936. She attended Ottumwa Heights College for two years and got her associate's degree. She went to work in a local bank there in Ottumwa.

On January 2, 1943 Mary married John David Brockman, who had enlisted in the Army in October 1942. He was shipped overseas to England, where he was waiting to participate in the Normandy Landing on D-Day in June 1944. While John was gone off to war, Mary continued to work in the bank.

When John returned home after the war, they moved to Fairfield, Iowa where John attended and graduated from Parsons College. In October 1946, their first child, David, was born and died the same day.

After John graduated from Parsons, he attained work at banks in several cities in Iowa. They had three more children, Tamara, Charles and Michelle. The family then moved from Iowa to Montana, to Arizona, to Minnesota, to California, and back to Arizona.

John and Mary separated in 1968 and were later divorced; she never remarried. After her divorce Mary went back to work for the First National Bank in Phoenix, Arizona. After 20 years, she retired in 1988.
