Hugh Gwynn was born abt 1608 in Wales. He was the son of Owen Gwynn (1586-1660) and Grace Williams Gwynn (1590-1680).

Hugh married Ann Joyce Burnham (abt 1610-1650). Hugh and Ann were the parents of the following 3 known children: Hugh, David and John (Gwyn) Gwynn.

Col. Hugh Gwynn contributed much to his new country in colonial Virginia. He was an early settler in York County, VA (called Charles River County then). In 1639 he represented Charles River County - later called "York County" in the House of Burgesses. He was a Justice of the Peace in York County, VA in 1641 and represented York County again in the House of Burgesses in 1646. Later he moved to Gloucester County, Virginia and served this county in the House of Burgesses in 1652. Gloucester County is on one side of York River and York County is on the other side.
