John Ray Smith was born November 27, 1918 in Reed, Arkansas to Clarence Elmer Smith and Ruby Blanche (Stinnett) Smith. He was raised in north east Arkansas with his eight brothers Elwood, Buel, Claxton, Clarence Iverson, Rupert, Mason, Warren and Don and his sisters Vivian and Hazel.

He moved to Michigan and met his love, Shirley June Hill and married her September 30, 1948 in Hoxie, Arkansas. They raised their children John, Jim and Judy in the house he built in Royal Oak.

He worked as a machinist and retired from Flex Manufacturing at the age of 70 years old. In 1991, at the age of 72, he and his brother Mason built the house in Goodells and he and June moved to the "farm" that year. John Ray loved his grandchildren Andy, Amy, Natalie, Nicole, Rachel, Victoria and Shawnee and his great grandchildren Jonathan and Moira. John Ray served as an elder for the Clawson Church of Christ then the Heritage Church of Christ as well as the Port Huron Church of Christ. He sang in a gospel quartet, "The Wonderland Quartet" spreading the joy of the Lord. He enjoyed gardening and giving away most of what he grew. He liked to hunt and to watch the animals from his chair in the family room.

For 93 years, John Ray was known for his gentle spirit and easy way, his love of his family, and his love and service for the Lord.
