Avery was the son of Earl Winchell and Gertrude Baker. He grew up in Dutchess County, NY. He was a veteran of the U.S. Army, having served from 1946 to 1948 in Japan. Marrying in 1950, he moved to Columbia County with his wife, settling in Philmont, where they raised their daughter. Avery worked for a time servicing furnaces for Agway. Then he began a career driving car carriers for companies based in Selkirk, NY. Avery is survived by his ex-wife and by his daughter, Debra Winchell.
