July 6, 1944 - Humboldt Independent - William Braby, son of Edmond and Amelia Braby, was born at Braemar, Ontario, Canada, July 9th, 1884 and died at the Lutheran hospital in Fort Dodge, Iowa, May 31, 1944 at the age of 59 years, 10 months, and 22 days. He came to the United States with his parents when just a small boy and made their home. In Humboldt County where he grew to manhood and received his education.
He was united in marriage with Bessie Ball of Ottosen, Iowa June 19, 1907. They made their first home in Rutland where they have lived until his death. While they had no children of their own, they have had the joy of making a home for a son and daughter of Mrs Braby's sister, Mrs. J.S. Vesterby, who died November 11th, 1918. Since then Mrs. Vera Vesterby Skow, of Rutland and Joy Vesterby now with the armed forces somewhere in England, have found in Mr. and Mrs. William Braby the loving care of a father and mother. Mr. Braby has served two terms on city council of Rutland and has served one term as street commissioner. He was a lover of the out-of-doors and found joy in hunting and fishing.
Mr. Braby has not been in good health for a number of years but has been actively employed until he was stricken with a heart ailment a short time ago. Following a stroke on Tuesday May 30th, he was taken to the Lutheran Hospital in Fort Dodge where the best of care was given but he was unable to recover and passed away on Wednesday morning May 31.
He leaves to mourn his going, his beloved wife, Bessie Braby of Rutland and the two children who have been a part of his life and home, Mrs. Vera Skow of Rutland and Joy Vesterby with the armed forces in England. There are also three sisters and three brothers: Mrs. Maude McDonald, of Rutland, Mrs. Ada Nielson of Glendale, Calif., Mrs. Eva Hawk of Des Moines, Lawrence Braby of Des Moines, Lloyd Braby of Rutland, and George Braby of Dakota City.
One sister, Mrs. Eliza DeGroote and his father and mother have preceeded him in death. Funeral services were conducted Saturday afternoon at 2:00 o'clock from the Lindhart Funeral Chapel. Dr. W.L. Breaw, pastor of the Methodist church officiating. Two numbers were sung by Paul Leavort and accompanied by Mrs. Vernon Miller. He was laid to rest in the Union Cemetery near Humboldt.
