Hazel Ballf Lester was the daughter of Bridgie and Peter Ballf of Roseburg, Oregon. Her siblings were: Joseph, Harry, Harold, Myrtle, and Nicholas. They were a very close knit Irish Catholic family. Ballf Street, off of West Harvard Avenue, is named after the family.
During World War II, Hazel was married to John Beal and lived in the San Francisco area. Her husband was a Merchant Marine captain. His boat was torpedoed off the east coast of Europe in route to Russia and he died.
Hazel came back to Roseburg. She married Harold Peterson Lester who owned a store in Roseburg (Lester's). The marriage did not last.
Hazel became a real estate broker and worked for Helen Glenn Real Estate. She and Mrs. Glenn had been friends and neighbors since childhood. In her later years, Hazel Lester lived on the North Umpqua River near Whistler's Bend Park, near Glide.

LESTER, Hazel Ballf -- 74, of Roseburg, died at a Roseburg nursing home on August 10, 1979. She was born March 25, 1905, in Roseburg. She is survived by 1 sister, Myrtle Ballf Hall of Roseburg; 1 brother, Colonel Harold Ballf of Walnut Creek, California; 2 cousins, Irene McLaughlin of Roseburg, and Elaine Getty of Eugene., All 6 of the Ballf children were born in Roseburg, and attended parochial schools while residing on Ballf Street. Hazel, 1 sister and 2 brothers graduated from Oregon State at Corvallis. She resided in California and New York for some 20 years and returned to Roseburg in 1950. She owned Lester's Gift Shop on Jackson Street for several years. After many years of service, she retired from the U.S. Veterans Medical Center in Roseburg around 1970. She built her home on 6 acres along the North Umpqua River in 1951. Hazel was chosen Woman of the Year in the Glide area in 1975; credited with 1,883 hours of volunteer services as a Pink Lady at Mercy Medical Center; also assisted in the formation of the Glide Volunteer Fire Department; was an active member of the Glide Garden Club and was instrumental in making the Glide Wildflower Show a success. Rosary will be held on Sunday, August 12, 1979, at 7:30 P.M. at the Long and Shukle Memorial Chapel and Mass of the Christian Burial will be held on Monday, August 13, 1979, at 10 A.M. at Saint Joseph's Catholic Church with Father Ken Reynolds officiating. Interment will follow at Saint Joseph's Catholic Cemetery.
