Sister Barbara Berg, IHM, 86, died Monday, Jan. 7, in the IHM Health Care Center in Monroe, Mich.
Sister Barbara was one of three children, two boys and one girl, of Emil and Eileen (Clements) Berg. She was born on Oct. 23, 1926, in Detroit, Mich., and at baptism received the name Barbara Therese.
Sister Barbara attended several elementary schools and St. Mary of Redford High School. She became a member of the Sisters, Servants of the Immaculate Heart of Mary, in 1944 in Monroe, Mich., taking the religious name of Sister Ann Paul.
Sister Barbara earned a bachelor's degree from Marygrove College, a master's degree in French from Laval University, Quebec, Canada. She was involved in formal education for 60 years at St. Mary, Wayne; St. Thomas, Ann Arbor; Holy Redeemer, Detroit; St. Mary Academy, Monroe; and 20 years at Lumen Christi High School, Jackson, Mich.
Sister Barbara was an excellent French teacher and taught French most of her teaching career. In 1993, after a year of renewal, she became a missionary at St. Charles Parish in Ferrier, Haiti, for three years. Sister Barbara's knowledge of French assisted her in speaking the Creole language of Haiti.
Sister Barbara is survived by her sister-in-law, Betsy Berg Jachman and nephews and nieces. She was preceded in death by her brothers, Rev. Paul Clement Berg and Emil Berg.
Visitation will be held at the IHM Motherhouse, 610 W. Elm Ave., Monroe, on Thursday, Jan. 10, from 1:30 p.m. until 7:30 p.m. with a Remembering at 3 p.m. A Mass of Resurrection will be celebrated in the Chapel on Friday, Jan. 11 at 10 a.m. with Rev. Marc Gawronski as presider. Funeral arrangements are under the direction of the Rupp Funeral Home, Monroe, Mich. Memorials may be made to the IHM Retirement Fund, 610 W.
