Russell Allen

Russell William Allen died January 18, 2013 at Ponca City Medical Center.

"Russ" was born March 24, 1920 on a farm near Laverne, Oklahoma. He attended schools in Laverne and Ponca City.

He married Elvera Mae Koehn in 1947 and they moved to Ponca City from Stillwater a year later. In 1952 they purchased A & A Paint and operated it until 1992.

Over the years the whole family came to work in the business. Russ used the slogan "When the house is a muss, just call for Russ".

He was a long time member of Albright United Methodist Church serving as a Sunday School teacher for the 4th grade up to adult classes, Lay Leader, and on many committees.

After retirement, one of his hobbies was keeping the walls freshly painted at the church. He enjoyed being a Gideon. He served his community as an active member of Noon Lions, Tippers club and Exchange Club.

He served as a member of the Salvation Army Board and volunteered at the Ponca City Hospital. He became a proud member of VFW and the American Legion after serving 3 years overseas during WW II.

Russ enjoyed all sports as a spectator, but especially loved attending OSU football, basketball, baseball and wrestling events. He was an avid horseshoe player and bowler, but his passion was slow pitch softball.

Starting in 1950, every spring you would find him on the pitcher's mound ready for another year. In 1987 he was inducted into the Oklahoma Softball Hall of fame and later into the Oklahoma Senior Softball Hall of fame. In 1971 he pitched what is believed to be the only no-hitter in slow pitch softball history.

Russ was preceded in death by his parents, Ira Deskin and Maggie Allen of Ponca City; wife Elvera; sisters Opal Brown, Cleatha Holcomb, Leatha Howard and Frieda Rives ; brother Harold Allen; daughter Elva Jean and son Benny; daughter-in-law Patty Allen.

He is survived by daughter Cheryl Long and husband Keith of Ponca City; son Dean Allen and wife Karen of Oklahoma City; son Ron Allen of Ponca City; 8 grandchildren, 19 great grandchildren, and 9 great great grandchildren.

Memorial donations can be made in his name to Albright United Methodist Church or Oklahoma Lions Vision Support Group through the local club, P. O. Box 532, Ponca City, 74602.
