Aaron Sr., the 5th son of Francis Van Schaick, was born in Monouth County, New Jersey ca. 1732. He moved to Virginia after 1759 and probably before 1770. In January, 1759, Aaron was witness to a will in Glouster County, New Jersey.

Aaron may have moved south with the Dutch migration in the 1760's to the Conewago settlement in Pennsylvania located about 3 miles south of the present city of Gettysburg. It is not a great distance west from that section to an area then known as the District of West Augusta of the State of Virginia. The District in 1776 became Monongalia County, from which was later created the presant West Virginia Counties of Preston, Harrison, Taylor, Tucker, Randolph, Lewis, Doddridge, Ohio, Upshur and Wood. The first reference to Aaron Sr. in Virginia involved his appointment as appraiser of the estate of Rev. George Caplingerin Augusta County. Aaron was paid his travel expenses to Pennsylvania, where William Davis, a resident of Virginia haddied intestate. Aaron was also involved in estate settlements in 1778 and 1779.

Aaron Sr.'s residence in Harrison County, Virginia is indicated by the 1785 census which lists him as "having in his dwelling 7 white souls." He was also on a list of "taxables" in 1785. It is not recorded when or where Aaron Sr. first married, but he probably married his first wife, Ruth, in Virginia. Their first child, Abigail, was born in 1773.

In 1795, Aaron Sr. purchased 100 acres of land on Leading Creek, from William and Sarah Wilson for 40 pounds. An adjoining 97 acres were purchased by Aaron Sr. in 1800 for $100.00. Aaron and his wife, Ruth, sold 144 acres to their son, Aaron Jr. and 67 acres to their son, Jacob.
